Abuzinada A.H. & Joubert E. 2000. Replenishing the desert: animal introductions in Saudi Arabia. World Conservation 2: 19-20.
Summary: This overview of animal introductions in Saudi Arabia discusses the two-pronged approach adopted by the NCWCD: (1) identifying areas worthy of protection according to a set of criteria; and (2) captive breeding programmes of endangered native species for reintroduction into these protected areas. The role of protected areas is described for the 15 areas that have been established, and the activities of the captive breeding centres are outlined. Captive breeding programmes for Arabian oryx, gazelles, houbara and ostrich are also described.
