Summary: As a result of extensive, if rapid, surveys in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a number of outstanding areas have been identified as candidates for protected reserve status. These proposed areas are representative of the diverse biotopes of Saudi Arabia and span the range of recognized international categories for conservation areas. The mandate of the NCWCD offers an unrivalled opportunity to realize the development of a comprehensive system plan for the protection of such sites. This paper presents an overview of a number of key sites which, on the basis of a number of criteria, are recommended for immediate protection by the Commission; they represent areas which either contain relict populations of wildlife, are suitable for their phased reintroduction or are important and fragile wetland sites. The wildlife considered in this paper include ungulates (oryx, gazelles and ibex), some carnivores (cheetah and leopard) and birds (ostrich and bustards).
