Summary: The NCWCD oversees the activities of two captive breeding and research centres, the NWRC, created in 1986 in Taif, and the KKWRC, created in 1987 in Thumamah, near Riyadh. This paper provides an overview of the current and proposed captive-breeding and re-introduction programmes based at these two centres. Ongoing programmes are in place for houbara bustard, ostrich, Philby's rock partridge, Arabian red-legged partridge, Arabian oryx, Arabian sand gazelle (reem), Arabian gazelle (idmi), dorcas gazelle, Nubian ibex and onager. Projects are being planned for guineafowl, Arabian bustard, Aloe species and fresh water fishes. Details of the proposed releases of Arabian oryx into the Mahazat as-Sayd reserve are given.
