Summary: An outbreak of tuberculosis in Arabian oryx Oryx leucoryx at the NWRC in Saudi Arabia, which resulted in the loss of 35% of the herd, provoked the development of a system of removing newborn calves from their mothers for hand-rearing soon after parturition. The procedure described here was instigated to prevent the transmission of the disease to the infants so that a healthy infection-free herd could be reared for reintroduction programmes. Between October 1987 and November 1992, 101 (50:51) calves were reared successfully to the age of four months.
